Cochiti Pueblo · artists
Virgil Ortiz (born 1969) is a visionary Cochiti Pueblo artist from New Mexico known for blending traditional Pueblo pottery with futuristic storytelling and high fashion. His distinctive black-and-white ceramics feature Cochiti figurative traditions alongside sci-fi inspired characters from his ongoing narrative about the 1680 Pueblo Revolt — reimagined as a time-travel epic. Ortiz's work spans pottery, fashion design, filmmaking, and digital art. He has shown at galleries and museums worldwide, collaborated with major fashion houses, and been featured in Vogue. Coming from a long lineage of Cochiti potters, he learned the art from his mother Seferina and grandmother Laurencita Herrera. He pushes the boundaries of what Indigenous art can be while honoring ancestral traditions.
