John Trudell (1946–2015) was a Santee Dakota poet, musician, actor, and activist who became one of the most powerful voices in the American Indian Movement. Born near the Santee Sioux Reservation in Nebraska, Trudell served as chairman of the American Indian Movement (AIM) from 1973 to 1979 and was a key figure in the 1969 Alcatraz Island occupation. After a devastating personal tragedy in 1979, he channeled his activism into poetry and music, releasing acclaimed spoken-word albums with guitarist Jesse Ed Davis. His album "AKA Grafitti Man" was called "the best album of 1992" by Bob Dylan. Trudell also acted in films including "Smoke Signals" and "Thunderheart." His legacy as a poet-warrior continues to inspire Indigenous resistance movements worldwide.
