David Treuer is an Ojibwe author from Leech Lake whose "The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee" was a National Book Award finalist. The book challenges the narrative that Native American history ended at Wounded Knee, documenting Indigenous resilience over 130 years.

He teaches at USC and has been instrumental in shifting understanding of Native Americans from historical victims to living, thriving peoples.
